Who qualifies for childcare subsidies
The Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) is the main federal source of childcare subsidies, run by each state with its own rules.
Federal limits
Under federal rules, a child generally must be under 13, live with parents who are working or in job training or school, and come from a family with income no higher than 85% of the state median income. Many states set a lower income limit.
Copayments
Most families pay a share of the cost, called a copayment. A federal rule that capped copayments at 7% of family income was repealed effective July 13, 2026, so each state now sets its own copayment levels.
Waitlists
Funding is limited, and some states have waitlists. Apply as soon as you know you need care.
Choosing a provider
Subsidies usually work like a certificate you can use with a participating provider. Ask providers whether they accept your state's program.
