How to estimate monthly and yearly childcare costs

  1. List every week of the year

Mark school days, holidays, school breaks and summer weeks.

  2. Match care to each period

Note which provider or program covers each period and its price.

  3. Add fees

Include registration, supplies, activity and late pickup fees.

  4. Total the gross cost

Add everything for the year before any help.

  5. Subtract assistance

Subtract expected subsidy payments or Head Start coverage.

  6. Decide on the FSA amount

If your employer offers an FSA, choose an amount you are sure to spend in the plan year.

  7. Estimate the credit

Apply the credit to any eligible expenses not paid through the FSA.

  8. Divide by twelve

Turn the yearly net cost into a monthly amount for your budget.

  9. Set aside the difference

Save each month for expensive months like summer.

  10. Review at open enrollment

Update the plan each year when prices and benefits change.
